What is it

Data use briefs are key assets when co-creating with a group of people as it allows them to understand how a product relies on data on a single sheet of paper. We use this tool in all of our Design Jams and each of our Design assets is accompanied by one.

How to do it

1 Define your focus areas & reflect in the template

Download our template at the bottom of this page.

Sit with your team and decide: what are the areas you wish to discuss and work on during the upcoming workshop? What screens and features? Where does key data use happen? Keep track and make a list. If you need additional guidance to look at your business through a data use lens, use our know your business tool.

2 Build a complete, straightforward and accessible brief

Open the template and fill in with your company's details, key screenshots and descriptions of the data use. Try to keep the text simple and straightforward to make it accessible to anyone within your team but also to people outside of your organisation. If you've done the know your business tool already, use it to fill-in the data use brief.

3 Make the data-use brief your go to asset

On the day of the workshop, bring one per participant working on this product. Pin it in plain sight if you have whiteboards for the teams and make them available on the work station as well. Use it during our Kick-off as a team (https://www.ttclabs.net/toolkit/kickoff_as_a_team) and Know your Business exercises, and throughout the ideation phase as a supporting work document.
