What is it

Collecting, using and sharing data plays an important role in digital products and services today. Visualising the value exchanges involved will enable participants to think holistically and improve the business to fit the needs of all users. This tool is particularly useful if real digital services are involved in a Jam, as it helps participants take a fresh look at their existing solutions.

How to do it

1 Prepare the materials and work space

Download the Value exchange cards ↓ . Print and cut a set for each team. Provide a large piece of paper to draw on.

2 Brief the participants

Explain the aim of the exercise and how it works. Define a value exchange (i.e. an agreement between parties to give and receive assets with perceived worth) and introduce the two types of cards (i.e. stakeholders and values).

Remind participants that value can be in the form of assets, labour, salary, data, payments, connections, knowledge, skills, amongst others. Map out the service

3 Identify stakeholders

Write down one stakeholder per card in the production, delivery and use of the service. Place the cards on the paper apart from each other. Consider stakeholders like service providers, users and potential partners.

4 Represent the value exchange

Draw lines and arrows to represent the value exchange between the stakeholders. Add cards to represent different types of values. Pay special attention to data that is being used across the business model.
