Design a challenge
Empower business stakeholders to produce a brief that captures the challenges and opportunities.
What is it
To engage teams in a Jam, concise, focused and inspiring challenge briefs are essential. Use this tool to help business stakeholders articulate data's role in delivering their value proposition and the problems they are facing.
How to do it
1 Meet with the business stakeholder
Set up a working session with the person whose business problem the Jam will be solving. Download and bring a copy of the Design a challenge ↓ template to this meeting. You may also bring the Challenge examples ↓ for inspiration.
2 Draft the brief
Go through the template together. As you fill it out, explain why each element is necessary by going through the prompts included. In case certain information may be missing by the end of your meeting, ask the business stakeholder to work on it and to come back to you with an updated version.
3 Assess and finalise
Evaluate the challenge brief and rewrite it as needed by considering the following questions:
- Is it short and focused?
- Is it compelling? Will it motivate the teams to work hard?
- Is the description of the intended user of the service fleshed out?
- Are the included technical details necessary, complete and understandable?
4 Introduce the challenge
Share the finalised challenge briefs with the facilitators who will be conducting the team kickoff.
